CSKA v Man Utd preview

Team News:

Fletcher and Park Ji-Sung (both knee) have stayed at home along with Giggs, Rooney and Evra, while United also have doubts over Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov.

The Serbian defender is suffering with an ankle injury that also kept him out of the 2-1 win over Bolton at the weekend while Berbatov also picked up a knock in the win over the Trotters.

If Vidic fails to make the match it should mean Jonny Evans continues to partner Rio Ferdinand, while Danny Welbeck could come into partner Michael Owen upfront if Berbatov is ruled out.

Ferguson likes to play with a lone striker in Europe especially in away games so Owen may start upfront on his own against CSKA.

Edwin Van der Sar made his first appearance of the season at the weekend and should continue in goal having come through the game unscathed.

Gary Neville made only his second Premier League start of the season on Saturday and despite performing admirably, he could be replaced by regular right-back John O'Shea.

Giggs' absence could give Nani the chance to stake his claim for a start while Paul Scholes will also be pushing for a recall having started on the bench against Bolton.

Douglas Costa

United stepping up scouting in Brazil

Sir Alex Ferguson, who retains an interest in bringing Douglas Costa of Gremio to Old Trafford, has revealed that Manchester United have deployed a second scout in Brazil to scour what he considers to be one of the best areas in the world to scout for players.

In a radio interview in the US, Ferguson also provided more hints that he has had to work on keeping striker Federico Macheda's feet on the ground after his dramatic goals against Aston Villa and Sunderland shot him to prominence last season. "I've got to be careful when I talk about Italian players you know," he said. "The thing about Macheda of course is that he had a great first season. He was only 17 when he made his debut, and scored that winning goal against Aston Villa.

"That projected him into a different kind of profile. Most people hadn't even heard of the boy. Now we're having to deal with the improvement of the lad, and he's got strong, and he's got bigger, he's an outstanding finisher. We're trying to improve parts of his game which will be important for his development as a top player."
